synthetic mythologies

presented in collaboration with nolcha at m2 miami during art basel miami beach 2025

for most of human history myth came from outside the world it explained. now, myth is generated closer to home, on servers, in the feed, in whatever a recommendation model has concluded you’ll keep looking at.

the systems themselves have taken over the work the old gods used to do. faith gets curated by an algorithm before you’ve decided to believe anything. identity is something you perform through an avatar, and desire arrives pre-shaped by brands that understood what you wanted slightly before you did. it rarely ever gets presented as religion, which is part of why it functions as one.

classical myth worked by compression and took something too large to comprehend and forced it down into a single durable image you could hold in mind and pass along. networked myth runs the other direction, never settling into final form. a symbol that once stood in for the divine now mostly reproduces itself, picking up small mutations with each pass, optimizing toward whatever holds attention this week. the story isn’t told once and remembered anymore, it’s looped endlessly.

these aren’t quite human myths and they aren’t purely machinic either. they’re written somewhere in the exchange between feedback and belief, co-authored by recommendation systems and the attention they’re built to capture, with no single author you could name in charge of the result.

synthetic mythologies invited artists to explore the birth of new myths in the digital age where code acts as ritual, data as divinity, and interfaces as sacred space.
